5 Tips to Channeling Your Fall Eco-Fashionista

Posted by Jacqui Long on

Fall fashion is in full swing….and we love it! The rich colors, variety of textures and endless layering options make it one of the most favorite fashion seasons of the year.

But, style at the price of people and the planet is not beautiful, so how do you stay true to your eco-fashionista values when you’re out shopping for that stunning fall wardrobe?

Here’s 5 tips to keep in mind that can help you do just that:

1) Know Your Fabrics

The fashion industry is known to be the 3rd largest polluter in the world. Ouch. The chemicals used are ruining people’s health, harming the planet and polluting our drinking water. In fact, it takes nearly one-third of a pound of pesticides to make just one conventionally grown cotton T-shirt.

We can do better than that. Opt for pesticide free organic cotton or renewable materials such as Tencel or Modal. One of our favorite brands who does an amazing job of using sustainable fabrics is Reformation.

2) Color Theory

Choose brands that employ sustainable coloring methods like no-impact and all natural plant dyes.

Natural dyes are not only better for the environment, they’re also healthier for you. Your skin is the largest and most absorbent organ in your body and can act like a sponge for soaking up harmful toxins if you’re not careful. So keep it clean.

Also, some natural dyes preserve traditional artisan dye-making practices and can support poor rural communities….allowing you to give back!

3) Know Where To Shop

You’ve likely heard of “Fast fashion”. It’s what you see at most big box and novelty fashion stores. Unfortunately, it’s usually manufactured in sweatshops that deny humane working conditions to women and children laborers in China and other developing countries.

Let’s put our money elsewhere. Choose brands with ethical production practices, manufacturing locally and employing fair trade principles to ensure artisans are treated great and paid fairly for their work. It’s also safer for the environment. Mother nature will thank you.

4) Vintage Rules

Wear vintage. It’s the ultimate force in keeping your style on point and keeps clothing out of the landfills.

Freshen up your wardrobe with classic looks that never go out of style and rework these one of a kind beauties into your wardrobe all year long, saving time and money while looking like a rockstar. (Check out Buffalo Exchange)

5) Minimalist Beauty

Do you really need that? Let’s take control of the impulse buy.

Before purchasing, stop to think about what you already have and how you might rework it.

You might be surprised with how many beautiful, new ideas you can come up with that make you feel like you’re stepping into a whole new wardrobe...without spending a dime, wasting time or taxing the planet.

Now, get out there gorgeous! Rock your stunning fall eco-fashion with the extra love in your heart knowing you made the right choice.
